Welcome to St. Paul Church Historical Revitalization and Maintenance, Inc., a nonprofit organization (EIN 52-2295124) dedicated to preserving the historic St. Paul United Methodist Church and maintaining its surrounding grounds for future generations.
Founded on December 16, 2000, our organization was established with a clear purpose: to protect and celebrate a treasured landmark that represents an important chapter in African American history and the enduring pursuit of religious freedom.
A Historic Place of Worship Located on Beauchamp Road, St. Paul United Methodist Church was established in 1884 to serve the spiritual needs of the local African American community. At a time when opportunities for independent worship were limited, St. Paul provided a welcoming place where faith, fellowship, and community could flourish.
The church building, now more than 150 years old, was purchased from Concord United Methodist Church on Dion Road in Denton, Maryland. Today, it stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and the rich heritage of those who came before us.
Why Preservation Matters Historic churches like St. Paul are disappearing across our nation. With each loss, an important piece of community history is gone forever. We believe that preserving St. Paul is about more than protecting a building. It is about safeguarding the stories, traditions, faith, and legacy of the African American families who helped shape our community.
Through ongoing restoration, maintenance, and community support, we are committed to ensuring that this historic church remains a source of pride, inspiration, and remembrance for generations to come. This lead to the formation of the St. Paul Church Historical Revitalization & Maintenance Inc. The formation meeting was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin & Barbara Cook on December 16, 2000. Attending meeting were the founding members; Rev. William & Audrey Briggs Barbara Cook - First President Maurice Stanford William H Briggs – First Treasury Sadie Johnson Virgie Johnson Odette Hawkins – First Secretary Crawford Johnson
